The Characters

The next step is to populate the story. So far, everyone's dead: Abe, Tommy, the 9 flight attendants, 518 passengers, and three quarter of a million Muslims. Another half million or so are either wounded and/or shocked. Some of them need characterisation.

Stories and events never happen in isolation. For Abe to do what he did, there must have been an undercurrent of emotions encouraging it. Who else?

Possible characters:

• Martha, aged 53, mother of Twin Tower office worker: how does she fit in?
• Tariq: computer programmer, son of Iranian (Persian) refugee and american mother: what about him?
• Chuck, one of the guys who taught flight simulation: his guilt...
• Neil: son of an NY fireman who died in the smoke, now aged 17: what's he doing?
• Khaled: affluent family with western leanings: hears someone call him "raghead"
• Abdul-Khaliq: Egyptian mullah and qur'anic children's teacher
• Djamel: wannabee Malcolm X from the suburbs of Marseille, propelled to gang-warfare leader

And what about Abe? Why did he do it? Do we backtrack and look at his experience?
